Purdy/Kresge Library
Graphic Design I + Fall 2023 + Academic Project
In the Fall 2023 semester, I undertook an academic project aimed at addressing challenges faced by existing brands and finding effective solutions. I chose to focus on Purdy Kresge Library, one of Wayne State University’s libraries, because I felt it was not well known to many students. Despite its potential as a versatile space, the library’s website lacked appeal, and their advertising efforts were not effectively reaching the student body.
Many students view the library solely as a place for studying, but I saw the potential for it to offer much more. However, I think Purdy Kresge Library is more than just a quiet reading space; it serves as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It’s a haven for those passionate about arts and crafts, offering opportunities to engage in creative projects, play games, and unwind in a relaxed environment beyond reading and studying.

Research
To address these challenges, I conducted thorough research by visiting the library in person and exploring their website. I took photographs inside the library, with the necessary permission from the librarian and students, to capture the environment. By using Wayne State’s official logo, slogan, color palette, font, and mascot, I developed a comprehensive set of marketing materials. This included a new website that highlights the diverse activities available at the library beyond studying, such as arts and crafts, creative projects, and recreational activities.
Wayne State University school colors are represented in print work as green (PMS 561) and gold (PMS 1225). There are no specific percentages of each color required for documents, but the takeaway should be an awareness of the school colors. Unofficially, black and white serve as supporting colors, primarily as the color of body copy.
In addition, I designed a bookmark to complement the library’s focus on reading, a brochure to be displayed at the information desk, and a banner to be placed outside the building to attract more visitors.
My efforts successfully addressed the problem, as my classmates were convinced to visit the library after my presentation. This project showcases my ability to identify and solve real-world branding challenges through in-depth research, creative design, and strategic use of brand elements.
